What is the Fraser AIDS Health Council?

The Fraser Valley HIV/AIDS Health Council is a non-profit volunteer driven HIV/AIDS service organization. Its goal is to lessen the suffering of those infected with the virus HIV and to lessen the burden of those caring for people with such life challenging illness.

It takes special volunteers who know how to deal with life challenging illnesses to ensure full access to essential services for all members, families and caregivers within the mixed urban and rural areas of the Fraser Valley Regional District from Abbotsford through Mission to Chilliwack, Hope and beyond.

Building bridges between local, Mennonite, Native, Prison and other communities will help heal old wounds and shed the stigma attached to this disease. We will directly address quality of life issues through complementary and traditional health therapies. Empowering clients and volunteers is our goal, utilizing existing resources, training and developing new ones.

Education, prevention, advocacy and building self-esteem will ensure maximum benefit for all who learn and share within our Fraser Valley communities. Closer to home services will help ensure dignity, respect and quality of life services for those dealing with this handicap.

Both the organization and people within the region have needs. The organization needs a suitable office and service space. Professionals willing and able to provide services within the community need to register their willingness to serve. Those who recognize that poverty is often a direct result of HIV, forcing one off work, and are able to provide free services should register their willingness to give time.

If you are a people person who wants to work directly with persons with HIV/AIDS, there are always needs for rides to the doctor, meal delivery, home-making, helping with a move. If you are better with office work, there is always a letter to write, a phone to answer and something to prepare. Special event needs include setting up educational seminars, information booths and fundraisers. All this leads to a need for artwork, posters, regular media releases and follow up contact.

There is always a need to justify numbers to government and to keep confidential stats on access and use of services to justify future funding levels. People with skills at designing and implementing short and long term community studies, needs analysis and surveys are required. Materials like coffee pots, computers, microwaves, food, juices and freezers are often needed by our membership. Give us a call at (604) 852-8930, fax: 852-5724, e-mail plathamp@netscape.net
